Bedoukian halogenation

What is Bedoukian halogenation?

Bedoukian was the first to report the reaction in 1944. The Bedoukian halogenation method involves a sequential process for producing α-brominated ketones or aldehydes.

  • R1 = H, alkyl, aryl
  • R2 = alkyl, aryl
  • X = Cl, Br

The process includes the formation of enol acetate, the addition of bromine to enol acetate, and the acidic hydrolysis of the intermediate addition.

An alternative method for preparing α-halogenated carbonyl compounds is provided by Bedoukian halogenation.
