What is Benkeser reduction?

The Benkeser reduction is a chemical process that involves the reduction of aromatic and olefinic compounds using lithium or calcium and low molecular weight amines.

The Benkeser reduction can result in the formation of monounsaturated olefins, as well as fully reduced products. By varying the reaction conditions, it is possible to control the extent of reduction and selectivity of the reaction.
