Boyer reaction

What is Boyer reaction?

In the presence of Brønsted acids, the Boyer reaction extends the ring of aliphatic azides from ketones.

The reaction produces N-alkylated amides or lactams, but it is limited to aliphatic ketones. However, the work of Aubé and Milligan has brought about improvements by demonstrating that Lewis acids, such as TiCl4, can accelerate the conversion. Asymmetric variants of the reaction have also been developed. The Schmidt reaction is closely related to this reaction.
