What is Haworth methylation?

The Haworth methylation is a chemical reaction used to prepare methylated methyl glycosides from monosaccharides, using dimethyl sulfate (CH3O)2SO2 and 30 % sodium hydroxide NaOH.

The Haworth methylation involves the methylation of the glycosidic hydroxyl group, which can be subsequently hydrolyzed with acid to yield the free methylated sugar.
