What is Herzig-Meyer alkimide group determination?

The Herzig-Meyer alkimide group determination involves the reaction of a tertiary amine that contains at least one methyl group and lacks a β-proton with hydrogen iodide HI. This reaction results in the formation of a quaternary ammonium salt. Upon heating, this salt degrades, producing methyl iodide CH3I and a secondary amine.
